Below are some of the terminology that you should familiarize yourself with before choosing your next web hosting provider.

ASP:

ASP (Active Server Pages) is Microsoft’s first server-side script engine for dynamically-generated web pages. ASP.NET processes all code on the server. After the code has been processed, the server returns the HTML to the client. Programming ASP websites is made easier by various built-in objects. Each object corresponds to a group of  functions used for creating dynamic web pages.

What you need to know: When building web sites, ASP and PHP are both very popular language choices used to build dynamic websites that can interact with Databases and exchange information. To run ASP programs, it needs to be installed on an IIS Windows platform server, which is not free. PHP programs run on Linux, which is free. So if you are running a lot ASP applications, you will need to check out web hosting providers that offer such services.

Bandwidth:

Bandwidth is the capacity measurement given in terms of bit rate, for a given system engaged in the transfer of data over a connection. In website hosting terms, bandwidth is used to describe the amount of data transferred to or from the server to your website within a defined period.

What you need to know: Web hosting companies often quote a monthly bandwidth limt.

Example 1000 gigabytes per month

If your total amount of data downloaded from your website exceeds this bandwidth limit do to its popularity growth, the hosting company may shout off access to your site. Or if you feel the need to increase your websites page loading time, a higher bandwidth maybe needed.

CGI:

Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is a standard protocol for translating data from a webserver to a web browser. The task of such an information server is to respond to requests from client web browsers) by returning output. Each time a request is received, the server analyzes what the request asks for, and returns the appropriate output

Domain Name:

A common network name for your website address where people can find you on the internet by entering your domain name. name. For example, Amazon.com

Encryption:

Is the process of transforming information using an algorithm called cipher to make it unreadable to anyone except those possessing special knowledge, usually referred to as a key.

What you need to know: a password encryption will prevent hackers from damaging your site. This is an important feature to use, especially in regards to password encryptions. If you’re on the internet long enough, your site will undergo attempted hacks, either by competitors,or cyper punks looking to have fun. The importance of encryption can’t be stated enough.

Host:

Is a company that owns and stores servers that connect your domain dame to the internet protocol number. This allows web surfers to be able to locate your domain when the search.

What you need to know: There are many web hosting companies on the internet, however not all are equal. Some times the cheapes is the best for you needs, other time not. Some web hosting providers have cpanel, and CMS systems that can easily be installed with a click of a button. Look for features that you will be using and server uptime when selecting a hosting provider.

IP address:

Internet Protocol (IP) Number is more commonly referred to as your IP addresses. Its function as the primary protocol in the Internet Layer of the Internet Protocol Suite. It’s task is to delivering datagram packets from the source host to the destination host solely based on its address. For this purpose the Internet Protocol defines addressing methods and structures for datagram encapsulation. Think of it as your residential address on the internet.

Internet Service Provider:

Internet Service Provider (ISP) A company that offers their customers access to the Internet. The ISP connects your computer to the internet using a data transmission technology appropriate for delivering Internet Protocol datagrams, such as dial-up, DSL,  and cable modem.

Server:

A server is a computer that allows you to store information on it and is dedicated to providing services over a network through a request-response routine. These services are carried out by specialized server applications, which are computer programs designed to handle multiple requests. Some xamples of server applications functions include mail servers, file servers, web servers, and proxy servers.

Streaming Media:

Streaming multimedia is referred to as multimedia. It is continuously received by, and presented to the end-user while it is being delivered. General this mostly commonly includes audio or video playback and is usually applied to media that is being distributed over telecommunications networks in the form of music and video clips. Most other delivery systems are inherently streaming, e.g. radio, television, or inherently non-streaming, where the information is being stored on some physical device, e.g. books, DVDs, and CDs. 

What you need to know: Streaming media is a bandwidth hog so if you are planning on providing a lot of music files or vide clips to your visitors, you might want to consider the amount of bandwidth before selecting a provider. Most providers have upgrade packages, so if your website is loading a little sluggish, you can always upgrade to a bigger package.

URL:

URL (Uniform Resource Locator) specifies where the identified resource is available and the protocol for retrieving it. Every URL begins with the scheme name that defines its namespace, purpose, and the syntax of the remaining part of the URL. In addition, URLs that specify https as a scheme such as https://example.com/) normally denote a secure website.
