Free Web Hosting Limitations

Free web hosting is the easiest to find and the easiest to use. It doesn’t clean out your wallet and it still allows you to express yourself through the Internet. If you are just starting out, try working with a free host for a while to get a feel for things. Free web hosts are fantastic for beginning web developers or for those who just want a site for their own personal use, but they offer very few features and a lot of limitations for those who are more advanced.
Free web hosts offer minimal disk space and bandwidth. This limits the number of files you are able to upload and it decreases the allotted traffic flow each month. Most often than not, free web hosting companies do not allow you to use your own web developing programs and do not support flash applications.
Another downfall of using a free web host is that they are not the least bit secure. If you are planning on running an online e-commerce business, you are not offered SSL. A SSL certificate guarantees the confidentiality of a person’s personal information, such as a credit card number, when transmitting it over the Internet. With the lack of security that comes with using a free web host, the likelihood of your site getting spammed is greatly increased.
Free web hosts also often require that you advertise for their company by using pop up advertisements or banners on your web page. Actually, most of the time you have no choice but to advertise for the company since they have all of the control over it.
There are some instances when a free web host will work to your advantage however. Most will offer a control panel so that you can easily manage your site. Some will offer FTP (file transfer protocol) for downloads or file transfers and uploads, and many offer a guestbook so that you are able to keep track of your visitors. A free web host will be great for you if you just want to keep a personal blog that has just a few readers each month.
Nevertheless, a free web host is a temporary service for the most serious web designers. At a certain point in time, as your web site becomes better developed and begins to grow, you’ll need better bandwidth and disk space. If your company begins doing business online, you’ll need a high level of security. Your customers need to know that their transaction is safe and secure on your website and that it is impossible to steal their personal information. As your traffic flow increases, so do your file uploads. More and more people will hear about your site on a day to day basis, so you’ll probably need to upgrade shortly after your website is up and running.
