Features of Web Hosting

You may have just decided to start up a personal or business website, or you may have been thinking about it for a long time. Either way, it is extremely important to understand what each web hosting company has to offer. Make a list of the different products and services you expect from your provider and don’t settle for something that either doesn’t have what you’re looking for or has more than what you need.
There are plenty of different types of web hosting providers to choose from. They range from free web hosting and shared web hosting, all the way to dedicated web hosting. No web host offers exactly the same features as another does, so research is very important.
The features you are looking for may be underlying in the web hosts customer service and support. You don’t want to work with a company in which the technical support team treats you horribly. You most likely want to have someone to talk to and help you through tough problems pertaining to your site, 24-hours a day. Luckily, most web hosts rely on their technical support and customer service teams to bring in their business, so they offer live tech support 24/7 whether it be by phone, live chat or e-mail.
Maybe you are looking for a company that will offer your site lots of bandwidth and disk space. If you have an e-commerce business or run a blogging site, you’ll need a lot of both. Bandwidth allows for the steady flow of traffic (or lack there of, depending on how much you have) and disk space allows for the upload of content to your site.
If you run an e-commerce business, you will need a company that offers both security and reliability. Most web hosts offer FTP and SSL. FTP, or file transfer protocol allows for the transfer of files and information between networks of computers. SSL, or secure sockets layer ensures that the transfer of personal information and files is secure by encrypting the information before it is sent out.
When you’re just getting started, price might be the only thing you will base your decision upon. It is possible to find a reliable free web host, and is great for beginners. However, free web hosts do not offer the levels of support, security and reliability that other types of web hosts have to offer.
No matter what features you are looking for in a web host, it is always very important to research a company and compare it to others before committing to anything. Call the company’s customer service center to talk to a live individual and ask plenty of questions. Expect nothing less than the best from your web-hosting provider.
