Web hosting is a service that allows people anywhere in the world to run their own website. These sites can and will be viewed all around the globe. Web hosting works through companies that host servers, which keep your website up and running. Every website on the World Wide Web is run from some kind of web hosting server. There are many types of web hosting service providers and each one has benefits of their own.
One type of web hosting is free web hosting. With free web hosting, there are no costs to the customer whatsoever. The site is run on advertisements for other companies. The only bad thing about a free web host is that the features are limited. A free web host is a good place to start though, especially if you’re a beginner.
Another type of web hosting is shared, or same server web hosting. Shared web hosting limit’s the disk space and bandwidth for your website, but it is extremely cheap and efficient. A shared host will keep your site up and running on a server with a few to thousands of other websites.
Shared web hosts have an opponent. This opponent is called clustered web hosting. While using a clustered host, your website will run on multiple servers. All of these servers will be working with only your site to make sure that you are always up and running.
A spin off of the clustered host is the dedicated host. With a dedicated host, your site will run on a server that works for only your site, instead of sharing a server and instead of having to use multiple servers to run it. Dedicated hosting offers complete control to the webmaster, which means that in order to use a dedicated host successfully, you need to know quite a bit about web hosting.
Another type of web hosting is managed web hosting. A managed host in lemans terms, is like a rental property. You don’t have full control of your site on a managed host. The domain space is leased to you for a certain amount of time, and the web hosting service provider actually maintains the site for you. In order to make changes to your site, it is required that you call the customer service or tech support line.
As with any web hosting service provider, research and knowledge are very important. Know what you want and what you’re getting into before choosing a web hosting company. Understand that there are certain benefits that come along with every web host and that you have the ability to choose the web host that will work the best for you. Only you know what you need, so check out multiple companies while you are in the decision making process.
