Another type of web hosting is managed web hosting. A managed host in lemans terms, is like a rental property. You don’t have full control of your site on a managed host. With shared web hosting, your website will be run on a server with a multitude of other websites. The server holds all of your files and uploaded content as well as everything that has been uploaded from the others on the server.

As with any service, there are plenty of advantages, as well as some disadvantages. Shared web hosting is very inexpensive since all of the domain holders on each server pay a portion of the cost to run the server. You also don’t have to know very much about running a website on a shared server. The companies offer amazing technical support and customer service teams, most of them are live 24/7, so they are able to help out with any questions or concerns you may have at any given point in time.

However, with shared hosting, the security isn’t the greatest; especially if you are planning on running a business. Since the server is shared by so many, any number of webmasters on the server may upload content that is inappropriate, that causes viruses or opens the gate for spamming. A lot of times, a shared web host will own your domain name and the customizations to your web page are limited. There will be certain scripts and applications that may not work with a shared web host. Some hosts are also not Flash compatible.

With dedicated web hosting, your web page will run on it’s own server.  There are plenty of advantages and disadvantages to this.

On a dedicated server, you have much more control over the content of your page. You have the freedom to put whatever you would like onto your page, and the space to do it is tremendous compared to a website running on a shared server. You will be able to work with the company in order to create the perfect package to suit your specific needs, your connection will be better and you will be able to allow more customers to visit your page.

A dedicated web host isn’t the answer for everyone that needs lots of space on their web page though. To use a dedicated web host, you have to know so much more about web development than you would to use a shared server, and dedicated web hosts are not responsible for anything that happens to your web page. They are only responsible for the hosting and keeping your server secure. Dedicated web hosting also costs much more than shared hosting does since your web page runs on it’s own server.

No matter what, you will be the sole provider to your web page. Know what you need before you get into anything too serious. There is only one real disadvantage when it comes to using a dedicated IP web host. It is that some companies offer the service to you at a higher cost than what you may be willing to pay at any given time. Some companies will offer you a dedicated IP address at a very reasonable price though, so research multiple companies before opting for a server that you won’t be satisfied with down the road.

If you are unsure whether you have a shared IP address or you have an IP address that is unique to you, contact your web hosting company to check the details of the package you originally purchased from them. Most often than not, they will tell you that you have been using a dynamic web host. Ask them what needs to be done to change that. If you are unable to gain a dedicated IP address from your current company, start thinking about switching web hosts. You will definitely want to use dedicated IP web hosting if you are trying to optimize your search engine results.
