Web Hosting Guide

Web Hosting Guide - What’s actually important.

Since you’re thinking about starting up a website, you probably already know that in order to do so, you must subscribe to a web hosting service provider. This web host will keep your website live at all times so you don’t have to worry about any of the technical stuff that goes on behind the scenes. Before you begin, you’ll need to know what kind of website you will be designing. Is it a personal website or a business? Maybe you are planning to keep a journal or a blog for others to read. Whichever road you choose to take, there are important terms you will need to know in order to make an educated decision.

Get the Disk Space that’s right for you.

Disk space is simply the amount of space you are guaranteed by your company to upload any number of files, information or applications to your web page. Disk space is important if you will be blogging or journaling, since at least once a day (sometimes more), you will be adding content to your page. Often a company will offer unlimited disk space so you have the ability to upload unlimited content. But beware. Some of these companies only feel that you will use a small amount of space, so they will fine you if you exceed their limits.

How much Bandwidth will you need?

Bandwidth is what allows visitors to move freely through your web page. Without bandwidth, you would be the only person that would have the chance to look at your web page, and that is only because as the owner, you are responsible for keeping up on the updates and management of the site. Many companies will also offer unlimited bandwidth. The same holds true here. If you have more visitors than the company figured you would, you will be fined. Be careful.

Get to know your Operating Systems.

There are three main operating systems for web hosting. One type is Windows, the second is Linux and the third is Unix. Don’t let these confuse you. They are simply just the computer’s operating systems that the web host will run the site from. Windows web hosts run from the Microsoft Windows operating system, Linux (which is a branch of the Unix OS) runs on the Linux operating system and finally, Unix runs on the Unix operating system.

Customer Support is more important than you think.

No matter who you are or how experienced you are in web hosting, you want a company guaranteed to provide you with excellent customer service and technical support. There is bound to come a time where you will have some sort of question about the way your site is running, or how you can do something to improve your site. These people will be there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A good support team will also fix little bugs for you before they become big problems.

You Need Website Security.

When you run an e-commerce site, security is of the utmost importance. Your customers need to feel safe sending their confidential information your way. When your site is secure, your customers feel safe and will in turn, continue doing business with you. The security feature also helps to block spam from your website.

Make sure that any web hosting service provider that you use offers at least a 99% uptime guarantee. Uptime is the amount of time your website will be live. On the contrary, downtime can be planned or unexpected, and the company doesn’t have an obligation to tell you when it will happen or after it already happened. If a server is experiencing downtime, so is your website.

Choose the features that you feel are the most important to you and the way you want to run your website. This is after all, your deal. You should feel extremely happy with your final decision. Don’t settle for anything less than the best.

There are several steps and precautions to take when starting up your first website. First, you’ll need to learn some pretty common web language.

Disk space is the amount of space a web host will allow for you to upload files and content to your web page.

Bandwidth is, in lemans terms, the amount of traffic that is allowed to go through your web page on a month to month basis. Both disk space and bandwidth are offered in unlimited amounts by most web hosting companies, but truthfully, there is a hidden limit. You just have to ask to find out what it is. Otherwise, you’ll get charged for using it.

SSL is Secure Sockets Layer. It is used to transfer information confidentially to and from computer systems.

FTP is File Transfer Protocol. Most of us use this every day and don’t even realize it. FTP is the transfer of files or information through a network of computers through the Internet. An easier way to put it is that FTP is the downloading of files to a computer.

Uptime is the amount of time your server is guaranteed to be up and running. Make sure that your web host offers at least a 99% uptime guarantee, because if the server goes down, so does your website.

Now that you know some of the basic terms, make a list of what you want out of your web hosting service provider. This list could range from security and support to disk space and uptime. Check out some web hosting forums to read positive and negative reviews on each of the web hosts you are thinking about working with. If you know anyone to have ever owned a domain before, it probably wouldn’t hurt to ask them about their experiences as well.

Once you have made your list and done your research, it is time to choose a company. Choose the company that you feel will best provide for your needs and don’t pay extra for something you know you won’t use.  Once you have chosen your web host, you’ll need to enter your credit card information so that the company can either bill you each month, or bill you for the entire year. Paying per month is a smarter choice for starters, just incase you decide that you aren’t happy with your service. If you pay by month, it will be less of a task to change servers. The billing step is also where the research comes in handy. You don’t want to put your credit card information into a system that isn’t legit. With all the scams out there, you can never be too sure about a business.

Finally, it’s time to set up your site. Tech support will be there to help you along the way if you need anything. After everything is settled, start thinking about advertisements to get more visitors to your site. Be creative with your space and have fun with it.

Web Hosting Variations and their Benefits

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

Web hosting is a service that allows people anywhere in the world to run their own website. These sites can and will be viewed all around the globe. Web hosting works through companies that host servers, which keep your website up and running.  Every website on the World Wide Web is run from some kind of web hosting server. There are many types of web hosting service providers and each one has benefits of their own.

One type of web hosting is free web hosting. With free web hosting, there are no costs to the customer whatsoever. The site is run on advertisements for other companies. The only bad thing about a free web host is that the features are limited. A free web host is a good place to start though, especially if you’re a beginner.

Another type of web hosting is shared, or same server web hosting. Shared web hosting limit’s the disk space and bandwidth for your website, but it is extremely cheap and efficient. A shared host will keep your site up and running on a server with a few to thousands of other websites.

Shared web hosts have an opponent. This opponent is called clustered web hosting. While using a clustered host, your website will run on multiple servers. All of these servers will be working with only your site to make sure that you are always up and running.

A spin off of the clustered host is the dedicated host. With a dedicated host, your site will run on a server that works for only your site, instead of sharing a server and instead of having to use multiple servers to run it. Dedicated hosting offers complete control to the webmaster, which means that in order to use a dedicated host successfully, you need to know quite a bit about web hosting.

Another type of web hosting is managed web hosting. A managed host in lemans terms, is like a rental property. You don’t have full control of your site on a managed host. The domain space is leased to you for a certain amount of time, and the web hosting service provider actually maintains the site for you. In order to make changes to your site, it is required that you call the customer service or tech support line.

As with any web hosting service provider, research and knowledge are very important. Know what you want and what you’re getting into before choosing a web hosting company. Understand that there are certain benefits that come along with every web host and that you have the ability to choose the web host that will work the best for you. Only you know what you need, so check out multiple companies while you are in the decision making process.

Different Types of Web Hosting

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

There are several different types of web hosts available today. Some of the most common types include free web hosting, shared web hosting and dedicated web hosting.

Free web hosting is by far the easiest to come by. It doesn’t cost a cent and allows you to express yourself using the Internet. If you are just starting out, work with a free host for a while to get your hands wet in the web development world. Free web hosts are fantastic for beginners, but they offer few features and a lot of limitations for those who are more advanced.

For starters, free web hosts offer minimal disk space and bandwidth. This limits the number of files you are able to upload and decreases the allowed traffic flow per month. Most free web hosts do not allow you to use your own web developing programs and do not support flash applications. Free web hosts are also not secure so if you use one, the likelihood of your website being spammed is greatly increased.

Shared web hosting is also very popular, and still on the cheap side. If you are looking to run a quality website while spending a small amount of money each month, shared web hosting is the way to go. Shared web hosting is so inexpensive because the server your website runs on is shared with a multitude of other webmasters. Each of the webmasters pays a portion of the cost to use the server.

With a shared web host, you don’t have to worry about upgrading software or managing your website. The support team that runs the server does all of the tough work for you. Most web hosts offer 24-hour customer service and technical support. Most shared web-hosting companies also offer security, e-mail and shopping carts for their customers using the server for e-commerce. All you really need with a shared web host is the creativity and ability to express yourself or your business.

The disadvantages of running your site on a shared server are limited to low disk space, low search engine optimization and low bandwidth. Basically, shared hosts offer limited features. If you are expecting a lot of traffic or are planning on using your site for e-commerce, a dedicated web host will probably work best for you.

Dedicated web hosting is the third most common type of web hosting. A dedicated host costs the most, but it doesn’t have to empty your wallet each month. With a dedicated web host, you are guaranteed security and stability. You most likely will never have to worry about server downtime, as your server belongs to you and only you. Dedicated servers offer SSL (secure sockets layer) and FTP (file transfer protocol), which allow for the secure transfer of personal information and files through the Internet from one computer to another. The only downfalls that come along with a dedicated web host are the high cost and the required knowledge it takes to keep up with site management and software.

Make sure you research multiple web hosting companies before choosing whom to commit to. No matter which way you choose to go, you should always be happy with the decision you make and the company you choose to work with

Beginners Guide to Web Hosting

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

Creating your own website can seem like a pretty complicated task to take on if you’re a beginner. Luckily, web hosts are there to make things a bit easier for you. By choosing a web host, you are choosing to express your ideas and spread them across the world wide web with limitless potential.

Web hosts offer a plethora of feature options, so start by making a list of what you are looking for in a host. You’ll most likely want an e-mail address so your site visitors can easily get in touch with you. If you’re building a site for a business, you can find a host with a package that contains plenty of e-mail addresses for yourself and your employees. If you’re building a site and expecting a lot of traffic flow, host packages are available with unlimited bandwidth and storage space. Or if you are creating your site so that you can sell goods to your community, purchase a host package with a secure server (SSL) and a shopping cart so your customers can purchase directly from your website.

After you choose and purchase your host, think about what domain name you want. A domain name is the name that comes before the .com, .net or .org.. For example, yourdomain.com. (If you choose a package with e-mail, your address should look something like: your.name@yourdomain.com). Creating your domain name is the first time of many that you’ll get to use your imagination and creativity when working towards the final product, and it’s a huge step! Try to avoid false domain names where the company gives your domain a forward slash at the end of their dot com. Keep your name short and sweet, easy to remember and easy to type. The easier it is, the more people there will be visiting your site.

There are 3 common types of hosting; Windows hosting, Unix hosting and Linux hosting. Windows hosting is fairly popular, but not as popular as Unix and Linux hosting. This is figured to be the case since Windows is more expensive than the others, and you need a paid license from Microsoft to use it. If you are looking to use something you are familiar with, use Windows hosting. Otherwise, use Linux or Unix. Unix was the first web server operating system. It is known for it’s reliability and stability. It is less expensive than Windows, but not many people are familiar with it. The web server operating system to use is probably Linux. Linux is free and programming/security problems are easily fixed because it is an Open Source software, meaning that Linux developers can view and modify the source of the problem quickly and easily.

There are many different kinds of hosting. Free hosting is best for personal use like journaling or sharing your hobbies with others. You don’t get to choose a domain name, but it’s a good option for a web site with low traffic volume. Shared hosting keeps your domain on a server with a number of other domains. It keeps things cheap for everyone, but traffic is restricted as well as database and software support.  Security is also reduced because there are so many sites using the same server. Dedicated hosting is more expensive and require a higher level of skill than the others, but your host is dedicated to only your site. Security then reaches a high point and it’s good for large businesses who need e-mail accounts and database support.

Remember to make your list before you purchase just any domain. Most web hosts offer easy set up and instructions to get you going on the path to success. Choose your name wisely and keep in mind that you’ll get more traffic if you keep it simple. Get creative and most importantly
have fun!

Web Hosting - Why you need it and how to go through with implementation.

To simplify things, we will give a clear overview of what’s involved in the process.

You will need a website and that special domain name such as Amazon.com to get yourself on the information super highway. And your off to the races. If only it were so simple.

Web hosting involves a much more complex scenario then what’s portrayed above. In its most simplest form we can describe it as requiring registering of a domain name and leasing space on domain server from a hosting provider. In it’s most  complex form, it involves implementation of operation, network, and web server software, training, IT staff overhead and securing a climate controlled location, if you choose to host the web server yourself.

The first scenario cost as little as $4.95 a month to launch your website.  The second scenario cost 10’s of thousands of dollars, if not millions to set up, depending on your requirement and bandwidth needs.

As you can see, it becomes very cost effective to choose a web hosting provider.
