Web Hosting Guide - What’s actually important.

Since you’re thinking about starting up a website, you probably already know that in order to do so, you must subscribe to a web hosting service provider. This web host will keep your website live at all times so you don’t have to worry about any of the technical stuff that goes on behind the scenes. Before you begin, you’ll need to know what kind of website you will be designing. Is it a personal website or a business? Maybe you are planning to keep a journal or a blog for others to read. Whichever road you choose to take, there are important terms you will need to know in order to make an educated decision.

Get the Disk Space that’s right for you.

Disk space is simply the amount of space you are guaranteed by your company to upload any number of files, information or applications to your web page. Disk space is important if you will be blogging or journaling, since at least once a day (sometimes more), you will be adding content to your page. Often a company will offer unlimited disk space so you have the ability to upload unlimited content. But beware. Some of these companies only feel that you will use a small amount of space, so they will fine you if you exceed their limits.

How much Bandwidth will you need?

Bandwidth is what allows visitors to move freely through your web page. Without bandwidth, you would be the only person that would have the chance to look at your web page, and that is only because as the owner, you are responsible for keeping up on the updates and management of the site. Many companies will also offer unlimited bandwidth. The same holds true here. If you have more visitors than the company figured you would, you will be fined. Be careful.

Get to know your Operating Systems.

There are three main operating systems for web hosting. One type is Windows, the second is Linux and the third is Unix. Don’t let these confuse you. They are simply just the computer’s operating systems that the web host will run the site from. Windows web hosts run from the Microsoft Windows operating system, Linux (which is a branch of the Unix OS) runs on the Linux operating system and finally, Unix runs on the Unix operating system.

Customer Support is more important than you think.

No matter who you are or how experienced you are in web hosting, you want a company guaranteed to provide you with excellent customer service and technical support. There is bound to come a time where you will have some sort of question about the way your site is running, or how you can do something to improve your site. These people will be there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A good support team will also fix little bugs for you before they become big problems.

You Need Website Security.

When you run an e-commerce site, security is of the utmost importance. Your customers need to feel safe sending their confidential information your way. When your site is secure, your customers feel safe and will in turn, continue doing business with you. The security feature also helps to block spam from your website.

Make sure that any web hosting service provider that you use offers at least a 99% uptime guarantee. Uptime is the amount of time your website will be live. On the contrary, downtime can be planned or unexpected, and the company doesn’t have an obligation to tell you when it will happen or after it already happened. If a server is experiencing downtime, so is your website.

Choose the features that you feel are the most important to you and the way you want to run your website. This is after all, your deal. You should feel extremely happy with your final decision. Don’t settle for anything less than the best.

Why is Web Hosting Cheap?

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

If you can remember back in the 1990’s when the Internet first came into our lives and the lives of our love ones, think about how complicated we used to think it was. The Internet was new to everyone, and it seemed that only wealthy folks could afford it, let alone a computer. Do you remember how much you had to learn in order to get that first computer with the Internet up and running?

Back then, it seemed that only large businesses owned web space. After all, large businesses are where all the money is made, right? As time went on and research was conducted, the Internet became less complex and therefore became much more affordable. More and more people gained access to the Internet while more and more companies started creating their own web space. As the technology advanced, so did the numbers of web domain holders and people at home started to create their own personal web space as a sign of ownership.

There are so many web hosting companies to choose from today, no matter what you need your space for. With the advent of so many new web hosting service providers each year, companies have had to start getting more competitive with packages and pricing. Back when the internet first came about, these domains cost us so much. Now that there is so much competition, these same domains are being offered at a much lower, much more reasonable price.

Another theory is that young minds are eager to learn. The younger you were when you first got the internet, the more you wanted to learn about it, right? Well now that the generation is getting older, the minds of the youth have already gained so much information about the World Wide Web and we all want to get our hands on a piece of it. Since that generation is grown up now and graduating from college, they are starting their own businesses and therefore purchasing more web domains. The demand for different web hosting packages creates the need for more web hosting service providers and therefore decreases the cost of owning a domain.

We keep learning about new developments in the technological world everyday. Without the advent of the Internet, we wouldn’t be where we are today. Thanks to all of the research and studies that have been conducted, the Internet and the opportunity to own web space have been offered at much cheaper, more cost efficient prices.

Which Web Hosting is Right for You?

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

With so many different types of web hosting options available today, you are probably wondering which type is the best for you. In this article, I will cover three different types to hopefully make your final decision a little easier on you. Keep in mind though, that the final decision does have to come from you.

The first type of web hosting is free web hosting. Free web hosting doesn’t cost a single penny. It is run on advertisements for other companies, including the company offering you the free service. Free web hosting is great for people just starting out in web hosting. The sources are easy to come by and the software is the easiest to use. However, with free web hosting, you don’t have the opportunity for growth and expansion. Since the services are free, you are limited on disk space and bandwidth which means that the content you are able to upload to your site and the traffic coming to and leaving your site is limited. Many people start their website with a free host, but if you are pretty serious about your business, journal, blog or personal site, changing host types will come up in the near future.

The second type of web hosting is shared web hosting. Shared web hosting costs very little. Your website is run on a server with a multitude of other websites. These numbers can range from a few such as 2 or 3, to thousands of other sites. There are advantages and disadvantages to this. Some of the benefits include that website development, management and upkeep are kept very simple and accessible. With tech support and customer service that are out of this world, your questions and problems will always be answered and fixed in a matter of minutes. Another benefit is the cost. Since you are sharing your server with so many others, each of the domain holders pay a portion of the cost to run the server. Now for the disadvantages. You don’t have the ability to control all of the content that is uploaded to the server and you don’t know who or what types of websites are also being run on the server. This opens the gates for viruses. The security on a shared server isn’t top notch itself. With low security levels, your site is more likely to get spammed.

The third and final type of web hosting we will cover today is dedicated web hosting. Dedicated web hosting is the best of the three types of hosts. A dedicated server acts just as it sounds. The server your website is run on is dedicated to your website. There are no other websites being run on this server, so you will have better feature options, less viruses and best of all, much better security. If you are running an ecommerce site or online business, dedicated web hosting is the right choice for you. The only downfalls of dedicated web hosting are the costs to rent the server space and the knowledge that is necessary to get everything started and still keep up on everything. Since with a dedicated server, you don’t have as high a level of customer service or tech support, it is extremely important that you know what you’re getting yourself into before purchasing a domain.

Each of the three types of web hosting are all great. Only you know what you want and need out of a web hosting service provider, so do your research and make a list of what you want before you commit to a company that you will end up being unhappy with.

Web Hosting Uptime

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

Web hosting is a service that allows a website to run on a server by itself or with other websites at any given time. These websites can be seen from any computer with a connection to the World Wide Web at any time of the day or night. When deciding on a web hosting service provider, there are a few keep factors to keep in mind.

While some people are looking for a web host to offer them unlimited disk space so that they can upload limitless content to their web page every day, while others are looking for a web host to offer them unlimited bandwidth to keep the traffic flow of the site up and coming each and every month.

If you are running an online business or an e-commerce site, security is probably the most important feature to you. You will always want your customers to feel safe dealing with your business and sending their personal information out into the World Wide Web.

If you’re a newbie to the web world, technical support and customer service are going to be very important to you. You’ll want to run your site through a company that offers live support 24/7. Questions arise at all hours of the day, so it’s nice to have someone there to help you should a question come up at an odd time during a day.

No matter who you are or what type of website you plan on running, one of the most important features a web hosting service provider can guarantee is uptime. To put it in the simplest way that I can, uptime is the amount of time a web server is up and running. Any good web host should offer at least a 99% uptime guarantee. In reality, it should be higher than 99%, more like 99.5%, but 99% is still a good number. The higher the percentage rate for uptime is for any particular company, the less likely it will be that your website experiences any downtime. Downtime is the exact opposite of uptime. Downtime is the amount of time the server is down, and cannot be accessed by anyone.

If your server experiences downtime, whether it is planned or unplanned, they are not obligated to inform you. It is important then to have that high percentage guarantee, because each time your server experiences downtime, so does your website. That means that no one can visit your site and you can’t make any changes to it.

In choosing the best web host for your needs, keep all of these things in mind. Most importantly, think about what would happen to your customers or website visitors if your website should experience any downtime. Never work with a company that doesn’t offer at least a 99% uptime guarantee.

Web Hosting Service Providers Offer Other Services

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

Web hosting is a serious business. More and more people are learning about web hosting each and every day, and more and more people want to start up their own web business or web blog each and every day. You may think that web hosting service providers provide just that. Well, think again.

Web hosting service providers provide the server and the space to dedicate to your domain, but they also offer tons of features and applications to make the upkeep of your site easy and accessible for you.

Web hosting services offer live tech support and customer service, usually 24/7, to help with any problems that may arise with your website. You are able to reach them by phone, by chat or by email.

The level of security that comes with a web host is increasing everyday, as more people have to deal with stolen identity. If you run an e-commerce website, security is the most important feature a web host has to offer. When your customers know that their information is safely being sent to you through the Internet, you will know that your customers are happy and will continue doing business through you.

Depending on the amount of files, information and content you feel you will need to be adding to your site every day, the web hosting companies all have something to offer in the disk space department. Many companies will offer unlimited disk space so that you are able to upload as much content as you like.

If you feel that your website will be handling a lot of visitors, you’ll definitely want to check out the bandwidth packages these web hosting companies  have to offer. Along with disk space, many of these companies will also offer unlimited bandwidth. In the web world, unlimited only goes so far. Keep in mind that the web hosting service providers have to pay for this space, so they give you unlimited space, or what they think you will use. If you go over this amount, be prepared for a hefty charge. Ask your company about this before signing on to anything.

There are a bunch of different programming tools and programming languages that each web host has to offer. From PHP to Perl and MySQL to SSL and FTP, every service comes with different package options to choose from.

With so many other services and features that these web hosting companies offer, it is important to research multiple companies before making a decision. Only pay for what you will use and accept nothing less than the best for your website. You hold the master key, so make your final decision wisely.

Web Hosting Reviews - Buyer Beware?

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

You may think that when getting ready to start up an online blog or business, that reading web hosting reviews are the way to go in helping with your decision making process. Since choosing a web host is such a huge decision, let’s go through a couple of things before you have your mind set on those web hosting reviews.

First we’ll talk about testimonials and reviews on a particular web hosting company’s website. All of the reviews that you will find on these sites will be positive reviews. Some might say that they are even a little over the top with positive information about the web hosting service provider. What does this say about the company? Well, it either tells us that the company is actually the best that there is available to us or it tells us that they have hired someone to write these top notch reviews. Although some of the reviews might be of actual customers, it could also mean that since the company has the resources to filter the information coming through to them, they have the ability and reason to delete the negative reviews.

Some company’s have affiliate websites. They work together such as websites like eBay and Pay-Pal work together. These companies have every opportunity to advertise through their affiliate websites and post reviews through them so that customers don’t think that it’s the website posting the reviews.

There are plenty of web hosting review sites on the Internet as well. The funny thing about that is, that each and every one of the top web hosting lists on the sites is completely different than the next. How can you trust something that changes so drastically with each click of a button?

If you are insistent on using web hosting reviews to help you make your final decision, I fell that the best reviews to use are those found in threads on web hosting forums. Because of web hosting forums, people from all over the world are able to include their input on a certain company. These include good details and bad details. Either way, you can rest assured that these reviews are more reliable than any other reviews out there.

At the end of the day, you really want to choose the company that you feel will work the best for you. If you will be using reviews to help guide you in your decision making process, use only reviews with positive and negative information. Discard any review with strictly positive information. Talk to customer service and ask plenty of questions before making your final decision.

Web Hosting Instructions

There are several steps and precautions to take when starting up your first website. First, you’ll need to learn some pretty common web language.

Disk space is the amount of space a web host will allow for you to upload files and content to your web page.

Bandwidth is, in lemans terms, the amount of traffic that is allowed to go through your web page on a month to month basis. Both disk space and bandwidth are offered in unlimited amounts by most web hosting companies, but truthfully, there is a hidden limit. You just have to ask to find out what it is. Otherwise, you’ll get charged for using it.

SSL is Secure Sockets Layer. It is used to transfer information confidentially to and from computer systems.

FTP is File Transfer Protocol. Most of us use this every day and don’t even realize it. FTP is the transfer of files or information through a network of computers through the Internet. An easier way to put it is that FTP is the downloading of files to a computer.

Uptime is the amount of time your server is guaranteed to be up and running. Make sure that your web host offers at least a 99% uptime guarantee, because if the server goes down, so does your website.

Now that you know some of the basic terms, make a list of what you want out of your web hosting service provider. This list could range from security and support to disk space and uptime. Check out some web hosting forums to read positive and negative reviews on each of the web hosts you are thinking about working with. If you know anyone to have ever owned a domain before, it probably wouldn’t hurt to ask them about their experiences as well.

Once you have made your list and done your research, it is time to choose a company. Choose the company that you feel will best provide for your needs and don’t pay extra for something you know you won’t use.  Once you have chosen your web host, you’ll need to enter your credit card information so that the company can either bill you each month, or bill you for the entire year. Paying per month is a smarter choice for starters, just incase you decide that you aren’t happy with your service. If you pay by month, it will be less of a task to change servers. The billing step is also where the research comes in handy. You don’t want to put your credit card information into a system that isn’t legit. With all the scams out there, you can never be too sure about a business.

Finally, it’s time to set up your site. Tech support will be there to help you along the way if you need anything. After everything is settled, start thinking about advertisements to get more visitors to your site. Be creative with your space and have fun with it.

Web Hosting and Hosting Reviews

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

As you probably already know, the Internet is a great thing when it comes to knowledge. With the Internet, there is hardly a need for dictionaries or encyclopedias anymore. The technology keeps building and it doesn’t show any signs of stopping anytime soon. With that in mind, consider that since anyone is able to purchase a web domain from a web hosting service provider, anyone is also able to put whatever information they want to on the Internet. This information cycles through the screens of computers everywhere. That being said, you have to know what information to take seriously and what information should be discarded.

Open your web browser. Type in the World Wide Web address to your favorite search engine. Now type in top web hosting companies. How many search results come up? By clicking on any of these results, you are allowing false information to be fed to you. These companies all want their customers and hopeful customers to think that their web hosting service is top notch; the best that there is. All of these sites come with a top-number list, and they ALL say something different. No two websites will have the same list of top sites. Pretty frustrating, right?

Now if you were to visit the website of a web host that you are thinking about purchasing from, you would find a section with reviews and testimonials. There is almost a 100% guarantee that these testimonials have come from people who either work for the web hosting company or that they are from people who are affiliated with the web hosting company.

Most of the reviews and testimonials you will ever read about a company will flatter the web host. The review will contain all positive information, instead of reflecting some of the positive experiences a person has had along with some of the negative experiences a person has had with a particular company. An honest review is one with both aspects of the company. Any review with only positive points is a dishonest review. Every company has both positive and negative aspects to it. A good place to find honest reviews are on web hosting forums. On a forum, you have the ability to say what you want about a particular company and that company doesn’t have the resources to filter out the bad reviews.

What it comes down to is knowing what you want from a service provider. Web hosting reviews just aren’t enough when it comes time for you to make the decision on which web host to work with. Talk to companies and others people that you know who have used different web hosting service providers before. In the end, try to remember that no matter how good a company may seem from an online review, there is something they aren’t telling you. If you feel that you need to use reviews to make your final decision, only use those reviews that have both positive and negative points made.
