Web Hosting Guide - What’s actually important.
Since you’re thinking about starting up a website, you probably already know that in order to do so, you must subscribe to a web hosting service provider. This web host will keep your website live at all times so you don’t have to worry about any of the technical stuff that goes on behind the scenes. Before you begin, you’ll need to know what kind of website you will be designing. Is it a personal website or a business? Maybe you are planning to keep a journal or a blog for others to read. Whichever road you choose to take, there are important terms you will need to know in order to make an educated decision.
Get the Disk Space that’s right for you.
Disk space is simply the amount of space you are guaranteed by your company to upload any number of files, information or applications to your web page. Disk space is important if you will be blogging or journaling, since at least once a day (sometimes more), you will be adding content to your page. Often a company will offer unlimited disk space so you have the ability to upload unlimited content. But beware. Some of these companies only feel that you will use a small amount of space, so they will fine you if you exceed their limits.
How much Bandwidth will you need?
Bandwidth is what allows visitors to move freely through your web page. Without bandwidth, you would be the only person that would have the chance to look at your web page, and that is only because as the owner, you are responsible for keeping up on the updates and management of the site. Many companies will also offer unlimited bandwidth. The same holds true here. If you have more visitors than the company figured you would, you will be fined. Be careful.
Get to know your Operating Systems.
There are three main operating systems for web hosting. One type is Windows, the second is Linux and the third is Unix. Don’t let these confuse you. They are simply just the computer’s operating systems that the web host will run the site from. Windows web hosts run from the Microsoft Windows operating system, Linux (which is a branch of the Unix OS) runs on the Linux operating system and finally, Unix runs on the Unix operating system.
Customer Support is more important than you think.
No matter who you are or how experienced you are in web hosting, you want a company guaranteed to provide you with excellent customer service and technical support. There is bound to come a time where you will have some sort of question about the way your site is running, or how you can do something to improve your site. These people will be there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A good support team will also fix little bugs for you before they become big problems.
You Need Website Security.
When you run an e-commerce site, security is of the utmost importance. Your customers need to feel safe sending their confidential information your way. When your site is secure, your customers feel safe and will in turn, continue doing business with you. The security feature also helps to block spam from your website.
Make sure that any web hosting service provider that you use offers at least a 99% uptime guarantee. Uptime is the amount of time your website will be live. On the contrary, downtime can be planned or unexpected, and the company doesn’t have an obligation to tell you when it will happen or after it already happened. If a server is experiencing downtime, so is your website.
Choose the features that you feel are the most important to you and the way you want to run your website. This is after all, your deal. You should feel extremely happy with your final decision. Don’t settle for anything less than the best.
