Creating your own website can seem like a pretty complicated task to take on if you’re a beginner. Luckily, web hosts are there to make things a bit easier for you. By choosing a web host, you are choosing to express your ideas and spread them across the world wide web with limitless potential.
Web hosts offer a plethora of feature options, so start by making a list of what you are looking for in a host. You’ll most likely want an e-mail address so your site visitors can easily get in touch with you. If you’re building a site for a business, you can find a host with a package that contains plenty of e-mail addresses for yourself and your employees. If you’re building a site and expecting a lot of traffic flow, host packages are available with unlimited bandwidth and storage space. Or if you are creating your site so that you can sell goods to your community, purchase a host package with a secure server (SSL) and a shopping cart so your customers can purchase directly from your website.
After you choose and purchase your host, think about what domain name you want. A domain name is the name that comes before the .com, .net or .org.. For example, yourdomain.com. (If you choose a package with e-mail, your address should look something like: your.name@yourdomain.com). Creating your domain name is the first time of many that you’ll get to use your imagination and creativity when working towards the final product, and it’s a huge step! Try to avoid false domain names where the company gives your domain a forward slash at the end of their dot com. Keep your name short and sweet, easy to remember and easy to type. The easier it is, the more people there will be visiting your site.
There are 3 common types of hosting; Windows hosting, Unix hosting and Linux hosting. Windows hosting is fairly popular, but not as popular as Unix and Linux hosting. This is figured to be the case since Windows is more expensive than the others, and you need a paid license from Microsoft to use it. If you are looking to use something you are familiar with, use Windows hosting. Otherwise, use Linux or Unix. Unix was the first web server operating system. It is known for it’s reliability and stability. It is less expensive than Windows, but not many people are familiar with it. The web server operating system to use is probably Linux. Linux is free and programming/security problems are easily fixed because it is an Open Source software, meaning that Linux developers can view and modify the source of the problem quickly and easily.
There are many different kinds of hosting. Free hosting is best for personal use like journaling or sharing your hobbies with others. You don’t get to choose a domain name, but it’s a good option for a web site with low traffic volume. Shared hosting keeps your domain on a server with a number of other domains. It keeps things cheap for everyone, but traffic is restricted as well as database and software support. Security is also reduced because there are so many sites using the same server. Dedicated hosting is more expensive and require a higher level of skill than the others, but your host is dedicated to only your site. Security then reaches a high point and it’s good for large businesses who need e-mail accounts and database support.
Remember to make your list before you purchase just any domain. Most web hosts offer easy set up and instructions to get you going on the path to success. Choose your name wisely and keep in mind that you’ll get more traffic if you keep it simple. Get creative and most importantly
have fun!
