Linux Web Hosting

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

When going with the Linux Hosting package, the reasons are clear, security and cost. Most web hosting companies offer Linux Hosting as their basic package. This allows for substantially reduced in set up cost because it can utilize other major open source technology platforms.

Opens source applications that you can run:

MySQL

A relational database management system (RDBMS), which has more than 11 million installations. The program runs as a server providing multi-user access to a number of databases. If you don’t want to drop 50-100 thousand on the bottom model SAP or Oracle database, you’ve got to love the alternative of MySQL, because it’s free!

PHP

A scripting language originally designed for producing dynamic web pages. It has evolved to include a command line interface and can be used in standalone graphical applications. This means that Linux hosting servers now have the same ability as Windows.

Python

A high-level programming language that’s design philosophy emphasizes programmer productivity and code readability. Python’s core syntax and semantics are minimalistic with a large standard library.

XML

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is classified as an extensible language because it allows users to define their own elements. Its primary purpose is for information systems to share structured data, particularly via the Internet for maximum efficiency.

Some of the benefits that Linux has over windows, it that it’s open source, which means that code is free to alter which every way you want. There are also no seat or license fees associated with the system, which you will encounter with other platforms. This translates into higher uptime and less security issues in general, with fewer disruptions to your server.

author Posted by: James Norris | filed Filed under: Hosting Tips & Advice

Unix hosting consist of a multi-user computer OS, set up to function as servers.  Unix is usually deployed as the system of choice for major internet and government agencies. It’s an open source software, which means that it’s free to the general public. As always, there are advantages and disadvantages to using Unix hosting. Let us explore some of those below.

Unix hosting tends to be less expensive to run over Windows hosting. Most web hosting companies use Linux, a version of Unix, which substantially reduces overhead expenses. With this, hosting companies can lower cost, which means more money on your bottom line.

An are where you can see reduced cost, is in the open source market. The updates for Unix and Linux system are updated frequently from programmers contributing around the world. In addition, there are may free tool and applications for Unix servers. As open source software continues to take over, companies will continue to see reductions in cost, as most software will end up being free in the future.

Now the drawbacks of Unix Hosting. Well, since open source is still in it’s efficiency, although most open source junkies would argue otherwise – often there is a very steep learning curve for Unix and Linux operating systems. You must know command prompts and code in order to customize your server environment. Often hosting providers might only allow you access by Telnet or SSH. If you don’t have a strong overall knowledge of Unix, you could be spending a lot of valuable time, spinning your wheels, or pulling your hair out.

Things go consider in Unix Hosting is that it is free, and that’s why we love open source - But when you need an answer, sometimes you will only get technical jargon, that might be way over your head for the do it yourselfers out there. Other things to take into consideration are what special package features are offered by the hosting company. You might find your are looking for certain software pre-installments ready to be loaded on your site with the click of the add button. So keep your eyes open as you comb over the details and make sure Unix Hosting is the right fit for your situation.

Cheap Hosting

Cheap Hosting:

So you saw those cheap dollars signs parked out front of those web hosting offers and though you had to pounce! Unfortunately, your first reaction of “if the deal is too good, then it must not be true” just might be right. Some times the bare bones web hosting options might not be right for your needs. But then again, there are some real bargains out there. If you are just starting out, a lot of the minimum package is all you will need, as it takes a while to build a steady steam of traffic to your site.

Before you sign on the bottom line, here ar esome thing to look out for:

Unlimited Disk Space:

Almost all web hosting providers offer cheap hosting packages. However they usually cover themselves in excessive use policies to acceptable use. You need to know what the definition these web hosting providers are defining excessive use as and what happens if you should exceed it. There could be hidden fees that occur automatic charges the really rack up your bill if you’re not careful. This could cause major disruptions of you business and website, so read carefully.

Banner Hosting:

Have you ever seen those signs that say free hosing? Well you’ve heard the expression that there’s no such thing a free lunch. This expression is true because the web hosting provider makes their money by putting a big advertisement banner right on top of you page, usually letting everyone know that you are getting a free website by them, and that your visitors can sign up for a free website to.

If you are trying to build a serious site that doesn’t scream I’m cheap, and I don’t realize that my website looks like an early version of the 90’s during the birth of the internet age, then it might be more appropriate to choose a web hosting provider that is not 100% free.

However in the Banner web hosting environment, if you have you can usually have the banners removed for a fee.

Setup Fees:

Some things to watch out for are hidden setup fees. You need to ask these cheap web hosting providers if there are any setup fees, and what payment methods they accept. Almost all cheap hosting providers accept credit cards/debit cards, so you might want to watch out for companies that only accept Paypal as payment via direct debit of your bank account.
Paypal process credit cards, so companies that demand you pay them through paypal via via direct debit of your bank account, you might want to reconsider. It makes it easier to recover any damages this way, incase any disputes may arrive.

Download Limits:

Some cheap web hosting companies limit file size downloads and data transfer speeds. You know those slow load times on a web page that make you want to scream, you want to avoid that. Because there is nothing worse than someone sending you a link to a cool audio or video clip and watching it freeze. So be sure to check out the CPU limitations to make sure they don’t interfere with you needs.

In addition, some the the cheaper hosting plans might not guarantee their uptime, or critical technical support when you most need it. Think of it this way, how often does your website go down? If you’ve been on the web long enough you will experience your site going down on more than one occasion. If you’re a etailer, and your in the midst of the Holiday shopping rush, if you site goes down, you could loose substatical profit, with little resources of contacting some of the providers other than by email. Often these emails might not get looked at until 3 days later if you contact them after hours on a Friday evening. So keep a lookout for 24/7 support in the offers.

But don’t be discouraged. Do your research, as cheap hosting has it’s places. Whether you’re an affiliate pioneer, or looking for a place to throw up your family photo albums online, there is a need for good cheap web hosting providers. Just know what your needs are before you sign on the bottom line.
